When you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, what you eat becomes very important. You have to be very careful about maintaining healthy blood sugar. There are many foods which you can eat to manage diabetes.

In order to manage diabetes, your diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains; while being low in calories and fat at the same time. Foods that are rich in fiber are very beneficial in managing diabetes. Studies have shown that people whose diet consists of higher fiber have a lower risk of having type 2 diabetes.

1. BERRIES     

These small yet yummy berries are loaded with benefits. They have so many nutrients. Berries have antioxidants and fiber. They should definitely be eaten while suffering from diabetes. Blueberries,raspberries, strawberries and blackberries are all very healthy.
You can make smoothies, add berries to salads or cereals and can also eat them as an alternative to sweets while having a sweet tooth.



2. NUTS

   
Go nuts over nuts while having diabetes. There is a huge variety in nuts too. Almonds, walnuts, pistachio are to name a few. All these are richly packed in magnesium, fiber and healthy fats. Nuts also have omega-3 fatty acids.

You can add nuts to your smoothies, cereals or eat a handful as a snack. They are great at keeping the stomach full.


3. SWEET POTATOES               

Sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber. Fiber is helpful in managing diabetes thus sweet potatoes should be added to your diet in case you are suffering from diabetes. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin A, which tends to be really good for our body.

You can roast or bake sweet potatoes and add your favorite seasoning to them.

4. BEANS                   

Beans are a good thing to add into your diet if you have diabetes. There are so many types of beans. Garbanzo, lentil, peas and adzuki being some of them.

Add these to your diet as they are rich in fiber and are a great source of magnesium and potassium too. In case of canned beans, it is better to rinse them well so that the excess sodium is removed.


5. WHOLE GRAINS                     

Whole grains tend to be very healthy. They are jam packed with nutrients. Whenever you plan on eating grains, be it barley, wheat or oat, make sure you eat the ones that are rich in fiber. Whole grains also contain vitamin E, iron, magnesium, selenium and the B vitamins. You don’t always have to treat diabetes with medicines. There are many foods which are helpful while suffering from diabetes. You should make right food choices and should add lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet.

While suffering from diabetes, make sure to include fiber in your diet. Consult your dietician or doctor and make a proper food plan that you should follow while having diabetes.
